We all know that we live in an area prone to tornadoes. We’ve talked about tornadoes before, but we want to cover a few of the more basic tips that we often overlook but could be extremely helpful during a tornado.

  • Tip #1: Check with local authorities and make sure you know where your storm shelters are. If you need more information on that be sure to check out our blog online and we’ll post information on how to find the closest storm shelter to you.
  • Tip #2: Crouch down, protect your head and wear a helmet if you have one.

Staying Safe in the Aftermath of a Storm

3/27/2018 (Permalink)

Like it or not, tornado season is nearly upon us! We want you to be prepared if the unexpected happens.  While there is loss of life that occurs during a storm, many lives are also lost in the aftermath of a storm. Here’s a few tips on how to stay safe after the storm passes.

  • Tip #1: Tornadoes often strike when you least expect it. Be sure you have a designated meeting place to reconnect with loved ones in case you get separated during the storm.
  • Tip #2: Be sure to keep your driver’s license or some kind of photo identification on you. This will make it easier to access your home through security checkpoints that are often established in the harder hit areas.
  • Tip #3: Always keep your shoes on. Tornadoes leave bent pieces of metal, screws and many other debris that could easily cut you. Try to keep your shoes on in the aftermath.

Don’t Forget Your Pets!

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

Like it or not, tornado season is nearly upon us! We want you to be prepared if the unexpected happens.  Often times we do really well preparing ourselves and our home, but we forget our four-legged members of the family. So here are some tips to keep these precious angels safe and secure.

  • Tip #1: Remember to have food and water in your storm shelter for your pets as well. If you have a cat, don’t forget that litter box in case you’re stuck for a few days.
  • Tip #2: If you have a high anxiety pet you might want to consult a veterinarian about the best way to make them feel comfortable. Alternatively, a thunder jacket works well for most dogs and can be found at most pet retail stores or on Amazon.
  • Tip #3: Be sure to have a kennel setup in your storm shelter to give your dog or cat a safe place to hide. If you do venture out after the storm, be sure to keep your dog on a leash. It’s easy for them to get scared or lost in the aftermath of a storm.

Emergency Preparedness Kits – Vital Tools During Tornado Season

3/6/2018 (Permalink)

Like it or not, tornado season is nearly upon us! We want you to be prepared if the unexpected happens.  A valuable tool in preparing for tornado can be an emergency preparedness kit. Stocked with flashlights, tools, NOAA weather alert radio, water, food and more; having an emergency preparedness kit can make all the difference if you’re trapped in your storm shelter without access to emergency supplies.

Here are a few top items that should go into an Emergency Preparedness Kit:

  • When a tornado strikes, first responders are often inundated with requests for help, so you have to be prepared to survive for a short time on your own. A good basic kit has food and water supplies for at least 72 hours.
  • You should have a battery powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather alert radio that will alert you of an approaching tornado and keep you informed after the storm.
  • Be sure to have basic first aid supplies such as bandages and hydrogen peroxide to clean minor wounds.

For a full list and to assemble your own kit, be sure to visit: https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit

SERVPRO® team departs for Florida to participate in Hurricane Irma recovery efforts

9/14/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage SERVPRO® team departs for Florida to participate in Hurricane Irma recovery efforts Taylor Callens, Eunice Mack, Stan Nunley, Darrell Lowery and John David from left to right.

SERVPRO® of Dyersburg/Union City, SERVPRO® of Weakley/Gibson/Carroll Counties and SERVPRO® of Jackson/Crockett County announced, it has partnered with SERVPRO® Storm Team Wilson from Birmingham, Alabama, and SERVPRO® Corporate to help in Hurricane Irma recovery efforts.

“Since we started hearing about Irma being created in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, we began our preparations; asking among our team members who would volunteer to assist in Florida after the hurricane.” said David Caldwell, owner of SERVPRO® of the three franchises.

“In 2012, we went to help people in New Jersey affected by hurricane Sandy. We know the devastation that it causes to homes, businesses and communities. We knew that a powerful hurricane was coming, actually the most intense Atlantic hurricane to strike the United States since Katrina in 2005. We wanted to be there and help.”

The morning of September 12th, five members of the three SERVPRO® franchises left the Newbern and Jackson offices to join the recovery efforts for about 15 days. John David Caldwell, Taylor Callens, Eunice Mack, Stan Nunley, and Darrell Lowery plan to do restoration extractions flood water, drying structures and treating for mold depending on needs.

They know the conditions will not be optimal. Most probably they will not have electricity or running water, but they are committed to do their job to the best of their abilities in order to give back to Floridians their homes almost as “Like it never even happened".
